Overview | History | Strategy

The bulk of our work is done through a community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) programme that has a practical impact on disabled children's lives. Community based rehabilitation programmes are normally effective in ensuring holistic and accessible support, as they provide person centred care and rehabilitation within the home and community environment. The CBR programme will be implemented by KCH staff in collaboration with our partners and the 5 regional learning committees. The regional learning committees are organizations of parents and carers of disabled children who receive support and rehabilitation through KCH.

We also believe that the participation of communities and other stakeholders in the rehabilitation process is an essential element for the success of the programmes. KCH therefore works in partnership with a range of stakeholders namely rehabilitation centers, hospitals, donors, local NGOs, corporate entities and other line agencies within the rehabilitation sector.

We believe that policy and programmes in favour of disabled children should not just be a means to rehabilitate and adapt the disabled child to society, but to adapt society to the needs of the disabled individual. The concept of rehabilitation should gradually give way to the concept of creating enabling environment. And the concept of social assistance should be replaced by one of respect for the rights of disabled children and other minority groups.

KCH hence adopts a twin-track approach to rehabilitation of disabled children.
